Let The Sun Shine Ornament

This time of year the birds start flying, hopping and singing about. I absolutely relish waking up to the concert of birds in our neighborhood. I have my favorite birds to listen to and my favorite birds to watch. Some pretty, as a cardinal while some quite plain as the sparrow. They all have their own qualities that mesmerize me.

One bird that I have heard is plentiful in our area is the humming bird. Last year was the first year I saw one. I had hung some fuchsia on the porch by the dinning room window and they they would visit every day at dinner time. Sadly they never stayed long enough for me to get a photo so this year I will again hang fuchsia. Perhaps I will hang fuchsia on all of the porch hangers this year starting in May.

Needless to say, I adore all images of these tiny birds. When I saw the Sew Many Cards image of a hummingbird, I knew exactly what I wanted to make with it. This image is not longer available as a single. It is, however, available in the January 2010 combo set. This package, among several others, is on sale for only $10! You get 42 images in the set, that is only .28 per image!!! Even though I received some images I already owned, I could not pass up this price!

Humming bird The first step in making this window ornament was to print the image onto a Grafix make your own rub-on sheet. I printed out 2 copies since I had never used it before, but...I did not need the 2nd image. The directions provided make it simple and practically fool proof.

I used copic markers to color the image since they are alcohol based. The sheet was easy to accept the color, but blending was out of the question. To make the color appear, I also needed to use the darkest colors I have.

Next I cut out the image as closely as possible, as the directions indicated. Transferring it to the 2" microscope slide was simpler than pie, LOL. The blue sky I colored directly on the slide, then backed it with a 2nd slide.

You can purchase frames for the slides, as I used here. There is also metallic tape, which I prefer. You must attach an "o" ring or something similar to hang the ornament with if using tape, therefore I chose to use a frame to make a quick project.

All in all, from editing the image to hanging on a window, it took me less than 1/2 an hour to make this beauty. I do believe these would make wonderful gifts. The image can be sized to any glass ornament you desire to use. That is one of the many wonderful things that can be done with digital images!
